A DIESEL car has beaten the world’s best-selling hybrid vehicle, the Toyota Prius, to the top spot in a new government guide to greener motoring.
A new model of the Volkswagen Polo, which will be available in Britain in October, produces just 99 grams of carbon dioxide () per kilometre - five grammes fewer than the petrol-electric hybrid, Prius.
The Prius has become synonymous with environmentally minded celebrities, such as Leonardo DiCaprio, but the new Polo Blue Motion could prove even greener for some drivers.

TOKYO, Jul. 11, 2007 (AFX International Focus) — Japan’s largest automaker, Toyota Motor Corp (NYSE:TM) , and truck manufacturer Isuzu Motors Ltd plan to form a joint venture to make environment-friendly diesel engines, the Yomiuri Shimbun reported on Thursday.
The two companies will flesh out details and plan to announce the new partnership by the end of August, the daily said, without identifying its sources.
Toyota and Isuzu are likely to consider Poland and Hokkaido, in northern Japan, as the possible site for a new factory, the Yomiuri said.
Through the joint venture, the two are likely to develop and make 1.6-1.8 liter diesel engines that meet the Euro 5 emission regulation, aiming to manufacture 200,000 engines annually within a five-year period.
Washington DC June 15, 2007; The AIADA newsletter reported that Toyota Motor Corp. has announced it’s in talks with Japanese partner Isuzu on developing diesel engines, but no details have been decided.
The Nikkei reported in its Friday’s editions that Toyota, Japan’s top automaker, will outsource diesel engine production to Isuzu, which has a reputation for top-notch diesel technology.
