Two weeks after suffering defeat at the hands of arch-rival Audi in the Le Mans 24 Hours, the French outfit scored its first one-two in the latest round of the Le Mans Series, at Germany’s Nürburgring.
In Audi’s absence, the diesel-powered 908 HDi FAP dominated the 1,000km showdown, with the Pedro Lamy and Stephane Sarrazin entry leading home the car of Marc Gene and Nicolas Minassian.
Rather than lock horns with Peugeot again in Europe, Audi is heading back to the US to contest the remaining rounds of the American Le Mans Series, kicking off at Lime Rock, Connecticut, on Saturday. Having been robbed of Le Mans victory, Allan McNish returns to action, determined to retain his ALMS title. A successful defence would go some way to offsetting the pain he endured in France when the R10 he shared with Dindo Capello and Tom Kristensen suffered a wheel failure while leading after 17 hours.
“I’m still hurting inside after Le Mans, but there will be no better tonic than to get back to winning ways at Lime Rock,” said McNish. “Although Le Mans is the big race of the year, it’s now a case of concentrating on the rest of the season and ensuring Dindo and I retain the ALMS title for us and Audi.”
