Finally getting some real diesel news. This comes from tsn.ca.
Jacques Villeneuve’s goal to add the 24 Hours of Le Mans title to his racing resume may have to wait another year.
Despite winning the first two races they’ve entered in the Le Mans series this year, Peugeot says it does not think the new 908 HDi diesel can withstand the rigors of a 24 hour race.
While Pedro Lamy and Stephane Sarrazin won the Valencia event last weekend, teammates Nicolas Minassian and Marc Gene suffered from gearbox problems. Similar gremlins plagued both cars at the season opening even in Monza but both managed to finish the race and win.Peugeot is hoping to mount a serious challenge to the favoured Audi team, which made endurance racing history last year by winning the race in a diesel-powered car. It was the German company’s sixth win in the last seven attempts.
Audi has not contested the first two Le Mans series events in Monza or Valencia.
Villeneuve and Champ Car champion Sebastien Bourdais are also part of the Peugeot team which contest the 24 Hour event later this summer. He will be the first Formula One world champion to take part in therace since Mario Andretti competed in 2000 and he will be looking to join Phil Hill as the only drivers to have won the Indy 500, F1 World Championship and Le Mans titles in their career.
Villeneuve is also a former Champ Car champion, a title that Hill never sought.
Testing for the 24 Hours of Le Mans begins on June 3
