Biodiesel for the Future of F1? Looks Promising!

From news.com.au

FORMULA One boss Max Mosley has revealed his vision of the sport’s future and it involves diesel.

Mosley, president of governing body the FIA, is working on new technical regulations to be implemented in 2011.

The proposed rules call for 2.2 litre turbo-charged V6 engines running on environmentally friendly bio-diesel, capable of producing around 770 horsepower.

Also under consideration is a 10,000rpm rev limit, a uniform chassis, power boost button and four-wheel drive.

Cars are powered by 2.4 litre V8 petrol engines that pump out 750 horsepower.

Mosley is working with the teams and car manufacturers that support the sport, and outsiders Audi and GM, to make new rules more relevant to road going cars. Although the switches to bio-diesel and smaller turbo-charged engines are considered realistic ideas the uniform chassis is less likely to come off.

Mosley has previously called for change to find common ground with the conservative teams and automakers.

Can the burn rate of biodiesel even keep up with the piston velocities of a 2.2L engine at 10,000rpm? Even modern race/drag diesels can only hit 5000rpm before they rapidly drop off in power.

“make new rules more relevant to road going cars”
Um, can you say “I want to be like the LeMans series!”
