The European Union has voted for tighter emissions on diesel engines in cars and vans.
The move is particularly targetted at vans which the EU says are carrying more freight and accounting for more traffic movements in Europe’s congested and polluted cities.
The new standards will require an 80 percent cut in emissions of particles from new diesel cars and cars sold in Europe from September 2009 when particulate filters will become mandatory.
Nitrogen oxide emissions will be cut by 60 percent from 2014.
