Electro-mechanical Supercharger for Diesel Engines - SuperGen technology

SuperGen Electro-Mechanical Supercharger
From Autopresspoint

Electro-mechanical supercharger technology offers solution to key diesel engine design challenges
SuperGen technology is being applied to tackle two important issues in diesel engine design. SuperGen, jointly developed by automotive engineering specialist Integral Powertrain and transmission technology company NexxtDrive, is a variable-speed electrically controlled supercharger design that takes most of its power from a physical link to the vehicle’s engine. Electrical energy from the vehicle generator is used to power an advanced gearing system that can accurately vary the speed of the turbo compressor from zero up to 150 times crank speed. For diesel engines, the technology promises to deliver substantial improvements in transient response and help with emissions reduction.

New emission standards for diesel-engine trucks will drive up prices on new trucks in 2007, increasing expenditures for some trucking companies while possibly benefiting the used-truck market.

Beginning Jan. 1, the Environmental Protection Agency will require new diesel truck engines to meet stricter regulations for reducing soot and nitrogen oxide emissions. The new requirements will add $7,000 to $10,000 to the price of a 2007-model diesel truck, according to the American Trucking Association.
