VW, and consequently Audi, have already agreed to use Mercedes Benz developed Bluetec system to reduce NOx emissions in their diesels to meet Tier II Bin 5 standards. BMW will be finalizing their agreement on October 12th.
Bluetec is a system that uses AdBlue, and aqueous urea solution, that is injected after the combution process. The AdBlue solution releases ammonia which causes the nitrogen oxides to be converted to harmless nitrogen and water emission.
“We may not permit that this critical technology [i.e., diesel] for the US is bad-mouthed,” explains a insider. “The German automakers with their competence in diesel must go there together,” says an AUDI manager—also because of Japanese success with hybrids [there].
It’s great news to see there is a plan now made for the German diesel automobiles to be brought to the U.S. and cleanly. Although should we start a pool to see how long before a urea-bypass system is developed?
